Schnellock Murals

In June 2020, President Paino asked the Campus Environment Standing Committee to examine and propose a solution for the problematic content of the Schnellock murals in both George Washington and Monroe Halls. This request was based on the November 2019 Campus Environment Presidential Ad Hoc Committee’s Final Report Recommendation #6 (Pages 60-64) which states:

“The committee recommends that the historic Schnellock murals in Monroe and George Washington Halls are contextualized through interpretive signage as well as an on-line presence which describes in details the murals’ content and context. Special attention should be paid to ensure that the contexts and interpretations are accessible to all, including those with visual disabilities.

  • The condition of the murals in Monroe Hall depicting the Virginia founding fathers should be evaluated. Reversible concealment should be explored as an option to:
    • Conserve the deteriorating murals for future interpretation.
    • Provide the opportunity for new and inclusive murals focused on UMW as it exists today.
  • Concealment of representations such as Robert E. Lee in George Washington Hall.”

The Committee then developed a recommended approach and preliminary plan of action that prioritizes UMW’s ASPIRE values while recognizing the University’s commitment to historic preservation.
